Seven Notable Speakers and Their Legacies The New York Times

As the office has developed historically, however, it has taken on a clearly partisan cast, very different from the speakership of most Westminster-style legislatures, such as the speaker of the United Kingdom's House of Commons, which is meant to be scrupulously non-partisan. The speaker in the United States, by tradition, is the head of the majority party in the House of Representatives, outranking the majority leader. However, despite having the right to vote, the speaker usually does not participate in debate and only votes on the most significant bills. The House elects a new speaker by roll call vote when it first convenes after a general election for its two-year term, or when a speaker dies, resigns or is removed from the position intra-term.

The New York Times

Those eight years actually made Hastert the longest-serving Republican speaker in history. But any luster left after 2006 was lost when he went to prison for bank fraud charges stemming from hush money payments he had made to a former student he admitted to having sexually abused decades earlier. In 1994, two years into the presidency of Democrat Bill Clinton, Gingrich organized a campaign around a 10-item agenda called the "Contract with America." It provided a unified message for the party's nominees, who flipped more than 50 seats and stormed into the majority. Even a glance at the history of Republican speakers since World War II would tell him that. Without his Republican majority fully behind him, Johnson could not shape the package as the ultra-conservatives demand lest he lose Democratic backing. It forced him to leave behind tough security measures to clamp down on migration at the U.S.-Mexico border.

For some of McCarthy's critics, a major motivation has been the decentralization of authority in the chamber. They want less reliance on the leadership and more empowerment of the committee chairs. Although the voting continued for days, no clear alternative emerged with any chance of getting a majority.

Then, on Oct. 3, McCarthy became the first House speaker in history to be removed by a motion to vacate. Lawmakers call out the name of their choice for speaker from the floor, a rare and time-consuming roll call that heightens the drama on the floor. Members often liven up the proceedings by shouting or standing when casting their vote. By the 1970s, committees had gained such control over legislative outcomes that widespread reforms were adopted, which shifted power back to the speaker. Second, the speaker manages business on the floor and navigates legislative rules, structuring House debate in a way that will advantage their legislative priorities. Adherence to strict rules and procedures is necessary to overcome the difficulty of managing a large legislative body like the House of Representatives.

Those changes would shrink the power of the speaker’s office and give rank-and-file lawmakers more influence in drafting legislation. Jordan or any other Republican speaker candidate can only afford to lose four GOP votes when the House votes for speaker, if all members are voting, because winning a speaker vote requires a majority of the full House. McCarthy had been House speaker since January, when he won the gavel after 15 rounds of balloting.

The roles of the parties reversed in 1994 when, after spending forty years in the minority, the Republicans regained control of the House with the "Contract with America", an idea spearheaded by Minority Whip Newt Gingrich. Speaker Gingrich would regularly clash with Democratic President Bill Clinton, leading to the United States federal government shutdown of 1995 and 1996, in which Clinton was largely seen to have prevailed. Gingrich's hold on the leadership was weakened significantly by that and several other controversies, and he faced a caucus revolt in 1997.

McCarthy did not publicly endorse a candidate when Rep. Jim Jordan and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise vied for the nomination. Trump previously endorsed Jordan’s bid for speaker of the House earlier this month in another post on Truth Social. McGovern said he hoped that Democrats and Republicans could come together to elect someone different and McGovern said he'd be open to helping another Republican become speaker but he noted they would have to have some real conversations.

Since the House can't proceed to other business until it selects the speaker, a loss for McCarthy on the first ballot would require more votes until he or someone else does receive a majority — something that has happened only 14 times in the chamber's history. Republican leader Kevin McCarthy, of California, needs a majority of members present to vote for him — which makes the magic number 218 (but that math could get tricky; see below). If he fails to get that level of support, it would be the first time since 1923 that the House would need multiple ballots in a speaker election. Pressure has grown with each passing day for McCarthy to somehow find the votes he needs or step aside. The incoming Republican chairmen of the House’s Foreign Affairs, Armed Services and Intelligence committees all said national security was at risk. On Jan. 3, former Speaker Kevin McCarthy became the first candidate in the majority party to lose a bid for the House speakership in 100 years.

House Speaker Newt Gingrich (center), shown here surrounded by House Republicans, holds up a copy of the "Contract With America" during a speech on April 7, 1995 on the steps of the U.S. When the House returns from its recess next week, Speaker Mike Johnson is now widely expected to resume his duties without immediately facing a motion to oust him. The components would then be automatically stitched back together into a single package sent to the Senate where hardliners there are also planning procedural moves to stall final approval.

And he refused to put some bills that had widespread bipartisan support – such as a defense authorization bill – on the House floor without partisan additions. As part of a series of deals with hardliners to win the speaker’s gavel in the first place, McCarthy agreed that just one member would be required to call for a vote to “vacate” him from office at any time. Once a speaker candidate won a majority of the vote, the clerk will announce the results of the election. The candidate to become speaker needs a majority of the votes from House members who are present and voting. Choosing a speaker will be the first vote the House will take before new and returning lawmakers are even sworn into office on Tuesday. As set out under the Constitution, the session will begin at noon on Jan. 3, with all the lawmakers seated on the House floor and members from both parties joining in the vote for speaker.

“I think everyone’s resigned to the fact that she’s not going anywhere on her own,” said the second source who described Dunn’s autumn conservations. “She doesn’t have a grasp of the issues and doesn’t spend the time to learn,” this person said. The source also told The Post that Dunn had claimed White House chief of staff Jeff Zients knew about and supported the cloak-and-dagger scheme to push Jean-Pierre out of the West Wing.

Donalds, who is Black, is seen as an emerging party leader and a GOP counterpoint to the Democratic leader, Jeffries, who is the first Black leader of a major political party in the U.S. What started as a political novelty, the first time since 1923 a nominee had not won the gavel on the first vote, has devolved into a bitter Republican Party feud and deepening potential crisis. Jordan said he “hopes” to be speaker by the end of the day and “we will find out here pretty soon” if he has the votes on the floor.

Here's what happened Friday in the House speaker saga — and what is expected to occur next

She could activate a vote at any time so Johnson should know he is skating on thin ice. With one of the most narrow House majorities in modern times, Johnson can only afford to lose a single vote or two from his Republican ranks to pass any bill. That dynamic has thrust him into the arms of Democrats as he searches for votes to pass the package.

He added that in his 26 years in the House, he had never seen one party have to help the other like Democrats did this week. Sessions is among the growing list of members who are throwing their hat in the ring for speaker now that the field is wide open. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise will not run again for speaker, according to a source. Jordan’s backers expressed confidence he still could get there, but the Ohio Republican faces a major uphill climb.

Johnson, who also met with Jewish students before his remarks, said he planned to call President Biden later Wednesday to urge him to take action, adding that the National Guard may need to be deployed. "Our feeling is that they have not acted to restore order on the campus," he said. "This is dangerous. This is not free expression. This is not First Amendment. They are threatening, intimidating." "I am here today joining my colleagues and calling on President [Minouche] Shafik to resign if she cannot immediately bring order to this chaos," the Louisiana Republican said to a crowd that drowned out his remarks with boos and chants of "We can't hear you" and "Mike, you suck." Washington — House Speaker Mike Johnson was met with loud boos when he visited Columbia University on Wednesday to call for the resignation of the institution's president as the campus has been roiled with accusations of antisemitism amid ongoing pro-Palestinian protests. The current state of internal politics among House Republicans is so unsettled that almost anything could happen at almost any time.

Rep. Pete Sessions is telling members he's running for speaker

Seventeen House members who identified as progressives (The New York Times called them "radical progressives") would cast their first-round speaker votes for Henry A. Cooper of Wisconsin. Cooper was a former prosecuting attorney from Racine who represented southeastern Wisconsin from 1893 to 1919 and again from 1921 until his death in 1931. Over his long career, Cooper only lost once, paying a price in 1918 for having opposed U.S. entry into World War I. Each had risen through the ranks, a survivor of earlier leadership upheavals, generally compatible with the party's broad rank and file. For Congress watchers, this telegraphs that something is historically amiss on Capitol Hill, or at least within the party running one of its chambers. And that was certainly the message from the House the last time it had this much trouble electing a speaker – a long and eventful century ago.

Through these and other rulings, Reed ensured that the Democrats could not block the Republican agenda. The 30-year saga began with Gingrich of Georgia, who was the first member of his party to gain "the big gavel" since the early 1950s and the presidency of Dwight D. Eisenhower. Gingrich had been a backbench rabble-rouser since coming to the House in 1978 and built up a cadre of supporters until he won the party's No. 2 power position as minority whip in 1989. He soon eclipsed the party's leader, Robert Michel, who was nearing retirement. But this time around several Democrats have indicated they would cross the aisle to support Johnson and frustrate Greene & Co. if it came to a vote. Democratic leaders have indicated they are open to this, and it essentially repeats the strategy that allowed Johnson to pass the Ukraine portion of the aid bill earlier this month.

It’s unprecedented for a speaker to be kicked out of their position in the middle of a congressional session. The type of House chaos in which parties could not agree on a speaker was more common before the Civil War. It’s easy to marvel at how Republicans allowed this to happen and to criticize Democrats for choosing the more partisan route, but both things were a long time coming. They were angry that McCarthy cut a deal with Democrats to avert a partial government shutdown and fund the government temporarily for 45 days.

Finally, it was agreed to exclude both delegations from the election and a speaker was finally chosen on December 17. John Boehner was elected speaker when the 112th Congress convened on January 5, 2011, and was subsequently re-elected twice, at the start of the 113th and 114th Congresses. The Republicans came out of the 2000 elections with a further reduced majority but made small gains in 2002 and 2004. The power of the speaker was greatly augmented during the tenure of the Republican Thomas Brackett Reed (1889–1891, 1895–1899). Reed, however, declared that members who were in the chamber but refused to vote would still count for the purposes of determining a quorum.

And tensions have reached a fever pitch at some of the nation's most prestigious universities in recent days as the demonstrations have worn on. "If this is not contained quickly, and if these threats and intimidation are not stopped, there is an appropriate time for the National Guard," he said. His predecessor, Frederick Gillett of Massachusetts, also had the top job for less than five years. But when he left after the 1924 session, his party was still firmly in control and had just elected President Calvin Coolidge to a full term.

That meant McCarthy did not have enough votes to be speaker, and neither did anyone else. Historically, there have been several controversial elections to the speakership, such as the contest of 1839. In that case, even though the 26th United States Congress convened on December 2, the House could not begin the speakership election until December 14 because of an election dispute in New Jersey known as the "Broad Seal War".

The primary role of the Speaker of the House is to preside over the House of Representatives. The speaker is chosen by majority vote of that body, usually along strictly partisan lines. A number of Democrats both inside and close to the White House said they were unaware of Dunn’s plot to replace Jean-Pierre, or claimed to only know about it through the rumor mill, but several said that the accounts by The Post’s sources rang true. While Jean-Pierre isn’t going anywhere, the issues that brought about Dunn’s failed machinations remain — with both sources saying the press secretary is too reliant on notes to provide the pushback and quick-thinking repartee needed to effectively champion Biden’s cause.

In the end, he was able to win over the Cooper voters with the help of his No. 2 leader, Nicholas Longworth of Ohio. Widely viewed as Gillett's heir apparent, Longworth was able to convince enough of the progressives that there would in fact be procedural reforms. On several occasions since 1997, we have seen a few members of the majority party voting "present" or voting for someone other than their party nominee. 7Speaker Schuyler Colfax was not a candidate for renomination to the House of Representatives in 1868, having become the Republican nominee for Vice President and was successfully elected to that office. He resigned from the House on March 3, 1869, the final day of the 40th Congress. “I witnessed Jeff and Anita coming pretty hard to Karine’s defense after [the January Axios report on Kirby wanting to call on reporters himself] and asking others to do the same,” said one Democrat who supports the press secretary.

Tours of the VDL House are conducted on Saturdays by architecture students from Cal Poly Pomona. Most of them served in that long stretch when their party held the majority for four decades. The most recent Democrat, however, is Nancy Pelosi, still a House member and the House speaker emerita. She comes in at fifth on the longevity roster, having served one day shy of eight years from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023. The list of the 10 speakers who served in the job longest includes just one Republican (and in the ninth slot at that). That speaker was Joseph G. Cannon of Illinois, notorious as the autocratic "Czar Cannon" during three two-year tours as speaker that ended with his party's historic defeat in 1910.

All About HOB Brewing Co

dunedin house of beer

Beachwood Brewing is a brewery and taproom located in Downtown Long Beach, serving up... Though most famous for having one of the best beef burgers in town – served on a sub roll with caramelized onions, bleu cheese, and arugula, and absolutely no ketchup – Father’s Office’s beer list is just as good as its burger. With frequent appearances from local favorites like El Segundo Brewing Co, Crowns and Hops, Kern River Brewing, and many more, this is not a place you want to miss on any LA beer tour. The Santa Monica original is an absolute institution, on Montana Ave. since 1953, and is the best of the three locations, but the newer (and bigger) versions in Culver City and the Arts District are worthy alternatives.

Menus

If you’re in the mood for food, they also run The Slice & Pint, a pizza spot right around the corner, which has a robust tap list in its own right. Firestone Walker is among the world’s best-known craft breweries, but they’ve been very intentional about opening up new locations. In fact, The Propagator – their Venice brewpub – is one of only two locations outside of their Central California mothership, and the only one in SoCal. They consider their Venice location to be an experimental brewhouse, meaning that in addition to their flagships – like Mind Haze and Union Jack – you can find a bunch of developmental brews you won’t find anywhere else.

Most beer drinkers that discover Enegren Brewing today don’t realize they’ve been holed up in Moorpark, brewing up classic German lagers since way back in 2011. Nowadays, they’re operating out of a much larger facility down the street, serving up beers in their brewery hall and Biergarten alongside neighboring food, wine, coffee, and shopping retailers. Lagers are finally a style that is seeing some love, and as a result, Enegren is making its way to beer bars and bottle shops all around California. Enegren embraces tradition, but they have a good time doing it, eschewing all the old-school pretentious vibes for a beer experience you won’t find anywhere else.

Placentia’s The Bruery opened in 2008, making them something like OGs in the SoCal beer scene. They also operate Bruery Terreaux, a sibling brewery in Anaheim that exclusively makes farmhouse-style wilds and sours. Both taprooms also feature beers from their Offshoot label, where they specialize in more mainstream hoppy beers. Casa Agria – Spanish for “sour house” – opened up as a membership-only barrel-aged wild ale project operated out of a small warehouse in Oxnard back in 2015. Fast forward seven years, and they’ve not only expanded their sour program and membership club, but they’ve added a wide variety of clean beers, a bustling taproom, and a steady lineup of can releases.

It’s little, friendly, welcoming, with live music and a range of local and exotic beverages. A gin bar with so many choices they’re running out of room for glasses to serve them in. As Joni Mitchell would sing, it has 'the whoosh of jungle blades and the crackle of northern ice'.

Welcome To HOB Brewing Co.

Each store carries a giant list of fresh cans and bottles from across the country, which you can bring home or drink on-site. The Long Beach location features eight taps – six in Culver City – with excellent breweries both local (Radiant Brewing, MadeWest Brewery), and far-off (Fremont Brewing, Great Notion Brewing). Few things go together as well as beer and pizza, and Fluid State takes that pairing to a whole new level. Situated in a historic building on Main Street in downtown Ventura, Fluid State has made a name for itself with legendary sourdough crust pizzas and elevated bar food.

Crafted with a hypoallergenic peanut butter blend, this brew is a crowd favorite for good reason. They consistently have somewhere around five different NEIPAs on draft. Green Cheek’s hazies stand out because they’ve mastered the balancing act of bright juiciness with layered depth and complexity. They bring a similar balance to all of their beers, and are increasingly branching out with other new techniques, including foeder-aging and mixed-drink style beers – like, for example, a 12% ABV gin and tonic style seltzer.

Plus, they always have a great selection of beers from Barrelworks, their barrel-aged sour facility. The tap room serves a bunch of excellent pub food, and both their indoor and outdoor dining rooms have plenty of space. Windsor is a singular experience, as far as craft beer shops in California go. They’re the ultimate multihyphenate in their field, as a bottle shop/tasting room/brewing supply shop/host of home brewing classes and salon style discussions. The bottle shop has a host of excellent, limited distribution beers from far-off places like 3 Fonteinen, Anchorage, Jester King, and Alvarado Street.

After debuting at an impossibly difficult time – January 2021 – this brewery absolutely blew away expectations, earning local acclaim before winning Great American Beer Festival’s Small Brewery of the Year award. Started by three former employees of The Bruery – also on this list – few breweries have consistently produced this high-quality beer so soon after opening as Radiant. They excel across styles, from the toastiest dunkel to the richest pastry stout, and their pale ales really stand out in a saturated market. Chances are, if you’ve heard of one brewery in Southern California, it’s Monkish.

Take a look at our log cabins, made from high quality slow-grown spruce timber for strength and longevity. This allows you to have a secure garden room that can be used as an office, studio, salon, and more. Our garden log cabins are the perfect solution to provide extra space to your home, that perhaps you didn’t know you needed, or that you have dreamed of for many years. Save money on moving house or building an extension, and simply expand your living space into the garden.

Wooden Workshop Shed

Water which constantly drips from leaves and branches can cause serious damage. Therefore, we recommend taking regular measures in cutting back any overhanging trees which are close to your wooden shed. In case you have to remove the damaged felt, it’s advisable that you wear safety gloves and goggles.

An apex roof log cabin is a traditional style of cabin that has a roof similar to a house. There are two slopes, which both meet in the middle, therefore making the middle the highest point of the building. Apex roofed cabins stand loud and proud, due to the centre point being so prominent. Position the log cabin at the bottom of the garden, in the heart of it, or within a corner. The apex roof will not allow it to be hidden, meaning there is every opportunity to show it off.

We always supply Polyisocyanurate insulation because it is a far better insulator than Rockwool or polystyrene, and gives great thermal efficiency. Our log cabins are available in a range of wall thicknesses; 28mm, 45mm and 62mm (Insulated) which is equivalent to 110mm U-Value. The easiest, most reliable base is a concrete foundation, as this can assure stability, and longevity.
